Clevemoor

History

In early 2023 the club decided it was time to build a new 0 gauge layout. With several members already having 0 gauge locomotives and stock from different periods and different areas, we thought the best thing to do would be a fictional preservation line somewhere where the old LMS/LNER met.

Once we had decide on the overall size of the new layout to be 36ft x 2ft 6in ( 9 x 4ft boards) all the members interested in developing the new layout were asked to go and sketch out a track design. After a group discussion, it was decided to have a 30ft scenic section and a 6ft fiddle yard. The layout had to be wired for either DC or DCC.

The new layout plan was drawn up in Anyrail 6 and an approximate costing was put to the committee for funding. The plan was for the layout to be ready for the 2025 club show.

Having plenty of flexi track available, the points and point motors were ordered. We decided on Peco points with Tortoise point motors. We set to work. The only thing we didn't have at the time was a name for the layout. So at the next club open day we put the plans out for the public to see and requested them to name the layout. At the end of the day it was down to 2 names - and after further discussions, the name of Clevemoor was chosen.

As the months went by, building work carried on at a steady pace. Members, who had never had any 0 gauge stock before, started turning up with new locos to run on the track. More and more buildings appeared but the thing we were missing was a scenic break before the tracks went into the fiddle yard. Step up Martin Smith, who created the fantastic scratch built bridge which worked perfect.

As you look around the layout you will find names on the buildings of most of the people involved in developing this layout.

In 2024 at the club autumn open day, with the majority of the scenic work, signalling and electrics complete, the first proper running of Clevemoor was on display to the public.

With a selection of locos from diesels to a wide range of steam locomotives, some with sound, the layout was put through its paces. The day brought to light a few minor problems but overall it was a success. Now all we had to do was the fine tuning, ready for the 2025 summer show.

The stock on the layout is built up of a selection of new/ second hand, ready to run and hand built stock which has helped bring many club members into this project. As all layouts, they are never finished and a few finer details are still being added.
